About the M - Alliance

For more than two years, the MIT Data Center has been researching and developing a standard semantic modeling language and computer architecture for application within  industry.  The goal is to link models and data together to achieve interoperability without a limiting schema.  The central effort of this goal is creation of a global dictionary that will be an open system, allowing users to create various definitions for words describing data and models.  In this way, an exact semantic definition will exist for each data or model element.

This conference is the kick-off of the M - Alliance, an effort to include interested non-profit, trade, and standards organizations in the work of The Data Center.  Membership in the M - Alliance is free to join for qualifying organizations.

"With pending issues concerning energy availability, it is more important than ever for the petroleum industry to integrate its supply chain through common standards for communicating supply and demand information."

Dr. David L. Brock, Founder and Director, The MIT Data Center

MIT Data Center Vision - David L. Brock, Founder and Director

The Data Center was formerly established in January 2005 after more than a year of research and preparation.  The goal of the Center is to link mathematical models and data together into an interoperable system that spans organizations. An important aspect of the approach involves a new computer language call M combined with an open dictionary that handles aspects of semantics common to various data standards such as XML.  An early application of M will involve seamless translation of schema's, providing much more efficient transfers of data between organizations.

At the conclusion of the day, Dr. Brock will demonstrate both the M language and dictionary using real data and descriptions from the petroleum industry.

Data Systems: Past Issues and Future Vision - John Eul

This presentation will focus on the practical issues facing industry concerning the implementation of various data standards within the petroleum supply chain.  Particular emphasis will be given to where new data standards add value as compared to traditional ways of transferring data that have been used in the past

Well Site Information Transfer Standards ML (WITSML), Smart Systems in the Oil Field - David Archer

Dave's presentation will focus on the internet-based standards such as WITSMLTM, which are providing a new platform for exchanging crucial operational information in support of decision-making processes within oilfields. While this family of standards has been developed for drilling operations, it is currently being extended to the production domain. This presentation will discuss the current state and future evolution of relevant standards and will provide an update on 1) WTISML as a family of standards for real-time drilling information, 2) examples of current usage, 3) the integration of XML-based information exchange with other paradigms already in use for production information, 4) provide examples of collaborative projects that are developing and/or using these standards.

Modeling and Simulation - Valery Polyakov

The focus of his presentation will be a discussion of taking geology

and geophysical data from the well site and interpreting it in a 3D

visualization. In addition Valery will discuss new ways of handling

this complex heterogeneous data using distributed high

performance computing.

About the Speakers

David Archer is President and CEO of POSC.  In this role, he is the leader of the consortium with responsibility for its direction, operation and communication with both the POSC Community and the industry at large. Mr. Archer is a well-known industry spokesman frequently playing the role of organizer, moderator and/or speaker in seminars and conferences.

Throughout his professional career, David has had strong interests in collaborative efforts across both disciplines and organizations. He has also been very interested in new technologies and has helped pioneer several for the industry among these are graphical user interfaces, 3D visualization, XML and Web Services. The two themes of collaboration and new technologies have been central to his tenure at POSC.

David is a native Texan, and he holds MA and PhD degrees in Mathematical Sciences from Rice University as well as a BS degree in Mathematics from TCU. Other academic affiliations include past President of the Rice Engineering Alumni, Adjunct Professor Mathematics at the University of Houston; he is also on the Advisory Board of the College of Technology at UH.

David L. Brock is Principal Research Scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and co-founder and a Director at the Auto-ID Center (now Auto-ID Labs and EPCglobal).  The Center was an international research consortium formed as a partnership among more than 100 global companies and five leading research universities.  David is also Assistant Research Professor of Surgery at Tufts University Medical School and Founder and Chief Technology Officer of endoVia Medical, Inc., a manufacturer of computer controlled medical devices.  Dr. Brock holds bachelors’ degrees in theoretical mathematics and mechanical engineering, as well as master and Ph.D. Degrees, from MIT.
