The MIT Data Center Request for Collaboration

The Data Center at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is a new initiative charged with researching and developing the languages, protocols, and technologies to integrate data and models across global networks. The Center will develop the infrastructure, recommend the standards, and build the prototype applications that will enable the interoperation of data and various types models within and across enterprises. The technologies and standards created by the Center will be open and freely distributed.

The Data Center wishes to expand both its effectiveness and the dissemination of research results by establishing a world-wide community of collaborating researchers and developers.

We envision several roles for researchers, including:

  • Formulating the underlying theory of interoperable modeling, including database development, model building, and integration.
  • Fundamental research on building a common dictionary to enable semantic modeling in practice.

Development work will concentrate on creating an open source software environment.  In this way, enhancements will be integrated into the “M” computer Language, which is in the early stages of development.  Activities will conentrate in the following areas:

  • Participation in the open standards development process.
  • Integration with existing technologies such as grid computing, immersive visualization, and multi-modal user interfaces.

We are interested in finding other Universities willing to take the lead in several areas of application and experimentation.  Formally called the Academic Alliance, we envision holding several seminars during the next year to discuss research and update plans for future actions.  The current plans are to focus on the following industries:

  • Consumer Goods
  • Automotive and Transportation
  • Health Care
