Nirmal Pal is Director of e-business Consulting, IBM Global Services Consulting Group, Mt. Pleasant, New York. Earlier he was on a long assignment in Tokyo and Singapore, where he was responsible for Information Technology consulting services and Network Computing consulting services for Asia Pacific. During the past 25 years, Nirmal has been involved in and gained extensive professional and management experience in national and international large scale information and telecommunications services, and is effective in business and practice development.

He built IBM's Asia Pacific I/T consulting practices, which is currently operational in all countries. Before that, he had been involved with IBM's professional services business for two decades. Following are some of the recent representative consulting engagements that he and his team conducted.

He helped a major multi-national firm in Asia Pacific to organize the I/T group more effectively and deliver value more efficiently. The study included an assessment of I/T infrastructures and management systems in all countries, and a recommendation of how I/T should be managed. The recommendations included a consolidation of I/T in two major locations to improve I/T delivery efficiency, and to act as change agents to enable business process reengineering to improve business efficiently.

He helped a major bank, who wanted to be the leading-edge and most efficient I/T user in his country, with a benchmark assessment with major leading banks in the region, and identify areas of opportunity.

He helped a major multi-national bank, who had decided to consolidate its I/T operations in one location, with a I/T organization capability assessment, and recommendations of how the I/T organization needs to be strengthened with people/skills, process and technology capabilities, and what is required to enable these capabilities. He helped a major bank, who wanted to be the leading-edge and most efficient I/T user in his country, with a benchmark assessment with major leading banks in the region, and identify areas of opportunity.

He helped a major multi-national group to implement I/T management processes to help manage I/T as a business within a business. The recommendations included identification of critical I/T management processes, and assistance in designing a major process and follow on implementation.

He helped a major multi-national client to conduct a market wants and needs study in an Asian emerging country.He helped this organization with recommendations in the areas of people/process/structure to improve capabilities and enablers to move ahead of competition.

He helped a major multi-national client to build a services business strategy in an Asian emerging country. The study included market segmentation, opportunity analysis, capability assessment, competitive profile, entry/exit barrier scenarios, and finally strategic recommendations with a five year implementation plan.

He has spoken at many conferences, and have been quoted by Economic Times, Computer World and other publications in Asia Pacific.
