Yeast-containing hydrogel capsules could be used to remove lead from contaminated water. “The fact that the yeast themselves are bio-based, benign, and biodegradable is a significant advantage over traditional technologies,” Patricia Stathatou says.

Lead toxicity is “an unaddressed public health crisis that leads to over 1 million deaths annually,” Jia Xu Brian Sia says. He is part of a team that developed low-cost, chip-scale devices for monitoring water for lead and other heavy metals.
