To this end we develop high-resolution large-eddy/large-wave simulation (LES) capabilities that include both the water and air phases using the conservative volume-of-fluid (CVOF) formulation. We apply these tools to study canonical problems of ship breaking waves (SBW), specifically the flow behind an idealized transom stern. We obtain two-dimensional and three-dimensional simulation results covering a range of Froude numbers and flow regimes. The mean and fluctuating values for water/bubble density and flow parameters under different averaging approaches are quantified, and their modeling implications investigated.
