Date: 03/27/09 Speaker: A. Tao Title: Long time water wave evolution and Freak waves Abstract: Freak wave has gained more attention for its unclear generation mechanism, kinematic and dynamic characteristics and occurrence probability. Under the presumptions of potential flow, no current, no wind, deep water and 2-D space, this talk will try to interpret the generation mechanism and the relation between the occurrence probability of Freak waves and the initial conditions. You will see the characteristics of Freak waves changing with varying timescale and varying initial conditions. The initial conditions of water wave include one component, carrier wave with imposed sidebands, carrier wave with white noise and Jonswap Spectrum with varying BFI. And the influence of dissipation induced by viscosity will be discussed.
