UROP
for Pay
UROP pay
applies to
projected
yearly earnings
like pay from
any job (i.e.
it applies
to financial
aid). The Student
Financial
Aid Office receives
information
about all
on-campus
earnings.
Consult the Financial
Aid Office with
specific questions.
When choosing
to UROP for
pay, you have
two options:
During the
fall and spring,
students work
part-time
(generally
no more than
25 hours per
week). However,
during IAP
or over the
summer, they
usually work
full-time
(40 hours
per week). International
students operate
under different
restrictions.
Generally,
you are not
expected to
put in overtime
hours on UROP,
but if you
do work beyond
40 hours,
you are automatically
paid overtime
(time and
a half). If
a student
has an MIT
job in addition
to a full
time UROP,
overtime hours
will be charged
to either
the UROP office,
the faculty
supervisor's
account, or
to the second
job. Having
an MIT job
in addition
to a summer
UROP is discouraged;
confusion
can arise
if you receive
two paychecks
from the University.
NOTE:
Special restrictions
apply to international
students regarding
paid employment.
During the
fall, spring
and IAP,
international
students may
not work in
excess of
20 hours per
week on a
paid UROP.
The U.S.
Immigration
and Naturalization
Service (INS) is
currently
reviewing
an option
that would
allow international
students to
work full-time
during IAP;
if this option
is approved,
the information
here will
be updated
accordingly.
During the
summer months
(June, July,
and August),
international
students may
work full-time.
These restrictions
also apply
to international
students participating
in UROP for
credit or
as a volunteer.
Before accepting
a UROP position,
international
students should
check in with
the International
Students Office
(ISO) to
ensure that
the terms
of their UROP
positions
do not conflict
with the regulations
listed above.
The ISO is
located in
Room 5-133,
and can be
reached at
x3-3795 or
by email iso-help@mit.edu.
