Guidelines
for MIT International
Students
Special
restrictions
apply to
international
students
conducting
UROP research.
Before accepting
a UROP position,
international
students
can check
in with the
International
Students
Office (ISO) to ensure
that the terms
of their
UROP positions
do not conflict
with these
restrictions.
Weekly
Hours
International
students are
restricted
in the number
of hours that
may be worked
on a UROP
project during
any given
week:
- Fall, Spring: 20 hours per week maximum
- IAP: 40 hours per week maximum
- Summer: 40 hours per week maximum
NOTE: If you are working up to 40 hours
per week during IAP and choose to continue your work through
the spring, you must reduce your hours to 20 or less per week,
beginning the first day of spring term classes. Similarly, if you are working
up to 40 hours per week during the summer and choose to continue
your work through the fall, you must reduce your hours to
20 or less per week, beginning the first day of fall
classes.
Restrictions on weekly hours apply to all UROP projects conducted
for pay, academic credit, or as a volunteer. You are responsible
for tracking your hours and making sure that you are working
within these guidelines.
Research
and Teaching
Assistantships
Full-time
Research and
Teaching Assistantships
constitute
20 hours per
week. If you
have a full
RA or TA,
you have reached
you maximum
allowable
work limit.
You are therefore
not permitted
to take on
any additional
on (or off)
campus employment.
Off-campus
UROP
While most UROP projects are conducted on-campus, some projects
take place off-campus at MIT-affiliated research sites. If
your project is taking place off-campus, you must first inform
the International Students Office first before accepting the
position. If the MIT-affiliated site has indicated that they
plan to pay you through a system other than MIT Student Payroll
system, you must inform the ISO before accepting
employment.
All restrictions on weekly hours apply to off-campus UROP.
