For
Coordinators
As a departmental
UROP
Coordinator,
you play an
important
role in the
UROP process
and are
relied upon
for your
judgment
and knowledge
of your
academic area. This
section provides
you with information
to help
you in your
role as a
departmental
UROP Coordinator.
As
a UROP Coordinator,
you:
- Interpret
the department's
requirements,
ensuring
academic
rigor in
projects
undertaken
by faculty
and student
collaborators,
and clarify
policies
and procedures
for departmental
review.
- Review
proposals before they are
submitted
to UROP
for final
review, and
examine
project
descriptions
and financial
requests.
In this
capacity,
we may rely
on you to
speak for
or against
the award
of UROP
direct-funding
in particular
cases. Please
see 'Reviewing
UROP Proposals'
for a full
description
of what
should be
included
in a UROP
proposal.
- Suggest
the kinds
of skills
and experience
that UROP
students
need to
acquire
before they
attempt
research
in your
department,
laboratory
or center.
- Compile
end-of-term
UROP grades
for submission
to the Registrar (if applicable in your department) and oversee
other administrative
functions
associated
with student
participation.
- Recommend
opportunities
for students
to meet
with faculty
and with
other students;
encourage
students
to participate
in symposia,
discuss
research
interests,
or hear
lectures
by potential
faculty
supervisors.
- Provide
help if
a student
has a special
problem
(e.g., s/he
cannot find
a faculty
supervisor
in the chosen
area of
interest,
needs access
to equipment,
or needs
financial
resources
to attend
a conference).
