Presented to a faculty member who has served as an excellent advisor and mentor for undergraduates and who has had a significant impact on their personal lives and academic success.  The Report of the Task Force on the Undergraduate Educational Commons (October 2006) highlighted the importance of quality advising and mentoring of students and the potential impact these relationships have on student success.

Suggested Criteria:

  • Intentional and sustained contact with advisees to ensure academic success
  • Caring, helpful attitude towards advisees, faculty, and staff
  • Participation in and support of advising to build strong relationships with advisees
  • Monitoring of student progress toward academic and career goals
  • Knowledge of resources to promote and support developmental advising
  • Desire to contribute to the intellectual development of advisees through informal engagements

Nomination Process:

A nomination for Earll M. Murman Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Advising may be made by any undergraduate, administrator or faculty member.  Each nomination should include a supporting statement based on the above criteria. A strong nomination is likely to include a clear statement demonstrating a sustained and significant commitment as an advisor and mentor to undergraduates.  The nomination should describe relevant accomplishments specific to advising or mentoring; supplemental material is welcome.  Multiple letters and rich documentation in support of a nominee will strengthen the nomination. All nomination materials should be submitted no later than March 14.

Nominations should be sent to:
