Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Connecting to Ethernet


Introduction

Note: These directions have been put in place to help those that purchase a new macintosh computer with Mac OS X 10.5 pre-installed configure ethernet access. The Mac OS X release team does not recommend that others upgrade at this time. Please see the project notebook for more information.

Connect Via Ethernet

  1. Open System Preferences, either from the Dock or the Apple menu.


  2. When the System Preferences window appears, click on the Network icon.



    Result: The Network configuration window appears. From this window, you configure TCP/IP, AppleTalk, PPP (dialup Tether) and even PPPoE (DSL with an outside provider).


  3. From the Location drop down menu (at the top of the window), choose Automatic. OS X will decide how you are trying to connect.
  4. From the left-hand pane, choose Ethernet.

Configure TCP/IP

  1. In the right-hand pane, enter the following settings as shown in the table below:

    Field Ethernet Direct Connection
      Configure:   Manually  
      IP Address:   your IP address, in the form 18.x.y.z  
      Subnet Mask:   255.255.0.0  
      Router:
      your gateway address.(If your IP address is 18.x.y.z, your gateway address will be 18.x.0.1)  
      Domain Name Servers
    (REQUIRED):
      18.71.0.151
    18.70.0.160
    18.72.0.3
     
      Search domains
    (REQUIRED):
      mit.edu  


    Result:


  2. Click on the Apply button in the lower right corner.
  3. To close the window, click on the red button.
