Critical Known Issues

These issues are of high impact to the MIT community, and may prevent deployment for many users.

Installation, Migration and Upgrades
  • All users are strongly encouraged to backup all of their user data before performing any type of installation, migration or upgrade.

Tether

  • Some users have reported problems using MIT's Tether service. We are looking into this issue and will update this site once we have more information. Once we've resolved this issue, we'll also post configuration instructions.

Minor Known Issues

These issues are of lower impact to the MIT community, and may prevent users of specific applications from upgrading or installing Mac OS X 10.5.

Adium X

  • Version 0.89.1 available for download from the MIT Software page installs, but will not launch. We are currently testing an updated MIT installer that supports 10.5. Interested users can download and install the mit-adium-1.2.3 beta installer.
Apple Mail
  • The setup assistant hangs when checking the connection to MIT's outgoing mail server. To get around this, click "Cancel" and then "Continue" during the check and continue setting up your account. Once the assistant has completed, you'll need to manually change the port of the outgoing mail server from 25 to 587 before you can send mail. We are working with Apple to fix this problem in future updates.
  • Leopard's Mail uses a new format that is incompatible with previous versions of Mac OS X. Users that share a single home directory across multiple systems should be aware that upgrading to the new format is irreversible.
  • kPOP access for incoming mail no longer works. Users should use IMAP instead. See Mail 3.0 Setup instructions for more detail.
Apple Remote Desktop

Citrix

  • "Page Setup" must be selected before first print job or else the application freezes when printing. As an alternative, folks can try using the unsupported 10 beta.

Coeus

  • Coeus will run on Leopard, but you will need to use a version that supports Java 1.5. The Coeus download page is in the process of being updated with the new version, but in the mean time it can be found at https://coeus.mit.edu/coeus/coeus15.jnlp.

FileMaker

  • A patch has been released for FileMaker Pro 9 and FileMaker Pro Advanced 9 that includes compatibility for Leopard and other fixes. It does not fix the issue with Instant Web Publishing. For more information and a link to the patch download, see FileMaker's Leopard support page.

FileVault

  • FileVault can only be enabled on volumes that are formatted as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)." It cannot be enabled on case-sensitive volumes.

Kerberos

  • Kerberos 4 is no longer supported.

Kerberos Extras

  • Users will need to install the latest version of Kerberos Extras, which can be downloaded from the MIT Software Distribution.

.Mac Backup

  • .Mac Backup 3.1.1 may stop responding when attempting to restore and may displays various alert messages when backing up. Users should upgrade to version 3.1.2 or later. ( Apple article 306483 )
MIT Certificates
  • MIT Personal Certificates do work on Leopard, but the process of setting them up is a bit different. Updated installation instructions can be found here.
OpenAFS
  • Users should install or upgrade to OpenAFS 1.4.5 or later. More information can be found here.

Parallels

  • Some users see this error message when launching images "[C] Microsoft Windows Vista/XP Timed out waiting for the file system to initialize. The volume has been ejected. You can use the init_timeout mount option to wait longer." To workaround this problem, Parallels suggests installing the latest version of MacFUSE, and restarting the computer (not just the virtual machine). Parallels also says they are working on some other "bugs," but didn't provide any specifics.

Printing

  • There have been some user reports of reduced printing functionality with older printers, say duplex printing, after upgrading to Leopard. Users that run into problems are encouraged to download and install the latest drivers from their printer manufacture.
SAPgui
  • Users will need to install version 7.10r1.2 or later of the SAPgui, which can be downloaded from the MIT Software Distribution.
VirusScan
  • VirusScan 8.5 is not Leopard compatible. A new version 8.6 is currently in beta and expected to be available by early 2008.
VPN Client
  • MIT's VPN Client requires users to upgrade to version 4.9.01.0080 or later. A new build of the MIT installer can be downloaded from the MIT Software Distribution.
  • The VPN client will not to connect if you've configured your machine to use .mac and have started the Back to My Mac feature. We've file a bug with Apple on this problem, but until it's fixed, stopping the Back to My Mac feature will allow you to connect to the VPN.

TidBITS also maintains a Leopard compatibility list that is updated regularly and may be helpful.
