Dreamweaver Release Notebook: version 8

Overview

The IS&T Dreamweaver 8 Product Release Team has begun testing the product for compatibility within the MIT computing environment, with the goal of establishing a support statement and making the software available to the MIT community in late Fall / early Winter.

IS&T does not recommend that MIT users upgrade to Dreamweaver 8 until the team has had a chance to fully evaluate it. Even if the software proves fit for MIT, note that the software has higher system requirements than previous versions of the product and will not work on versions of the Mac OS prior to 10.3.

Software Distribution

We will be examining the terms of our volume license agreement with Macromedia to determine a distribution strategy for Dreamweaver 8. A nominal fee will be assessed for the new version.

Timeline

The release effort began on October 11, 2005 and is expected to complete in late fall / early winter.

Key Decisions

IS&T will not support the following features:

  • Developing with XSLT, XML, .NET, PHP, J2EE/JSP, ASP and CFML
  • Advanced template features: template parameters
  • Built in image editing
  • Integration with other Macromedia applications such as Contribute, Flash and Fireworks
  • XPath expression builder and its resulting XSLT
  • Flash elements
  • Integration of RSS feeds using XML/XSLT

IS&T will provide limited support for Javascript. Supported scripts include unmodified basic behaviors found in the Behavior tab of the Tag Inspector panel group. IS does not support the JavaScript code found in the Snippets tab of the Code panel group. Additionally, JavaScript used to create a Flash detect and seamless degradation to static image, as provided by Web Communications Services, will be supported along with basic image rotation on refresh/reload. Other custom JavaScript will be supported on a case-by-case basis. Limited support for working with the custom Google search results XSLT will be provided on a case-by-case basis as well.
