MIT SIP.edu Installation

MIT implemented SIP.edu on March 20, 2003. Over 12,000 mit.edu email addresses were mapped to PBX phone numbers in the initial installation.

Installation Details

MIT is using Pingel SIPxchange for its SIP proxy. SIPxchange is providing the email address mapping to PBX extensions. Currently directory information is extracted manually from the MIT Data Warehouse. converted to XML format, and loaded into SIPxchange. The SIPxchange alias functions translate email addresses to five digit PBX extensions. Then the SIPxchange dial plan routes the call to either a registered SIP phone or via the gateway to the PBX.

The SIPxchange alias function and XML data format used for SIP.edu is described in the Administering Pingtel SIPchange manual in the SMTP to SIP URL translation section.

SIPxchange is also providing SIP service to about 50 hard and soft phones. These phones are reachable via SIP.edu and can also place and receive PSTN calls via the gateway to the PBX. SIPxchange is also providing voice mail service to the SIP phones. SIP devices are assigned a ten digit North American dial plan number to allow for caller-id compatability when calling out to the PSTN.

MIT is using a Cisco 2611 gateway with one PRI to our Lucent 5ESS PBX. The gateway is currently running IOS Version 12.2(11)T .
