There are two qualifying exams: the Written Qualifying Exam and the Oral Qualifying Exam.
- Written examination
- Tests breadth of understanding in Speech and Hearing Sciences Evaluates mastery of material contained in the core curriculum Evaluates ability to integrate concepts across subject boundaries Take-home format (one week) Generally taken in January of the second academic year Possible outcomes are pass, pass with conditions or fail. The conditions on pass usually take the form of additional study.

- Tests depth of understanding in the student's concentration Oral examination includes:
- Preparation of a written description of a proposed research project that could be investigated using the tools learned in the concentration courses. This document may be a draft of the future thesis proposal. An oral presentation of the student's proposed research in the concentration.
- Questions by the exam committee to probe the student's understanding of his/her concentration and related research.
Must be taken before the beginning of the fourth academic year
- Possible outcomes are pass, continued, or failed. A continuation allows students to improve their understanding of a specific aspect of the concentration, e.g. by acting as teaching assistant in a related course.
