Core Curriculum

The Core Curriculum includes six integrated subjects which provide students with a broad, rigorous background in the speech and hearing sciences:

Andrew Dykstra, Tom Wang, Nik Francis and Suh-Kyung Lee, four first year graduate students, prepare their tools for HST.721, Anatomy of Speech and Hearing. Photo contributed by Suh-Kyung Lee.

Acoustics of Speech and Hearing
The Peripheral Auditory System
Anatomy of Speech and Hearing
Speech Communication
Neural Coding and Perception of Sound
Clinical Aspects of Speech and Hearing

HST.714 [course website]
HST.721
HST.718
HST.710
HST.723 [course website]
HST.724

These six subjects are normally taken in the first year of study, and form the basis for the Written Qualifying Exam.

Three other subjects are required:

Research Approaches to Speech and Hearing
Speech and Hearing Laboratory Visits
Biomedical Engineering Seminar Series

HST.790
HST.791
HST.590

HST.790 introduces students in their second year to ethical issues in the speech and hearing sciences. HST.791 provides first-year students with broad exposure to research conducted by members of the program faculty. It meets once each week for an hour. HST.590 meets every other week and covers issues in biomedical science and engineering. All HST students are required to participate each semester.
