The Registrar’s Office oversees the renovation of the classroom spaces assigned to the Registrar. The Office works closely with faculty to develop project scope for renovations and for classrooms in new buildings. In addition to the faculty, the Office works directly with Audio Visual Services, Information Services and Technology, and the Department of Facilities to ensure successful outcomes of these projects.
The 155 classrooms in the Registrar's inventory comprise 149,000 square feet of academic space on MIT's campus. Ninety rooms, or 58% of the inventory, have been renovated since the inception of Project 2000 in 1988, the brainchild of the late Professor Margaret MacVicar, Dean for Undergraduate Education. Under the leadership of Dean MacVicar, MIT embarked on a long-term program of upgrading the Institute's teaching and learning spaces, taking into account the importance of identifying and integrating changes in pedagogy, advances in technology, and new expectations on the part of both students and faculty.
During the last 10 years, MIT has made significant progress in renovating classrooms with a seating capacity of 25-50 people. The next phase of Project 2000 is to focus attention on the largest lecture halls in the inventory, given that only 4 of the 13 lecture halls with a seating capacity of over 100 have been renovated in the last 20 years.
