The 2009 Department of Physics Freshman Open House
This year's Department of Physics Freshman Open House will take place on Tuesday, April 14th from 3:30-5:00pm in room 8-329 (Marble Undergraduate Room).
The Department of Physics serves MIT undergraduates in many ways.
As a foundational science, two semesters of physics are required of
all MIT undergraduate students. The Department takes pride in offering
numerous flavors of Physics I and Physics II to accommodate the diverse
learning styles of MIT students. We deploy many of our best teachers
to work with non-physics majors in these subjects.

The rigors of physics at
MIT gave me the confidence to tackle hard problems.
It also gave me an appreciation of complexity and
subtletyand the ability to know what you know
and what you cannot know. This has been incredibly
valuable in my venture career. Understanding science
has been crucial to determining how capable people
actually were, and whether competitors could mount
a serious challenge. Frankly, I think physics is
a terrific foundation for analytical pursuits, whether
it is law, medicine, engineering, business management
or investment.

For those who enjoy physics beyond the Institute requirements, we
offer three distinct options leading to a Bachelor of Science in Physics.
These are explained in more depth within this section of web pages.
Those interested in majoring in physics are welcome to explore the
curriculum, the activities of the Society of Physics, and the opportunities
afforded by our faculty and staff.

Believing strongly in the value of research for both undergraduate
and graduate students, the Department participates with enthusiasm
in the UROP program. Undergraduate students are encouraged to actively
participate in labs and research groups. This gives students the
opportunity to learn fundamental skills that will be valuable in
a variety of research settings.
Information on these topics and more can be found within the Undergraduate
Physics web pages on the left.
