Directions

Directions to MIT may be found at http://whereis.mit.edu/map-jpg?section=directions.

Telephone Basics

The area code for Cambridge is (617), and almost all MIT telephone numbers begin as 253-, 258- or 452. The last five digits of any MIT telephone number is considered the extension and can be dialed with only those five numbers from any MIT telephone. To reach an outside line from a campus telephone, a 9 must be dialed before the area code. More complete instructions regarding the MIT telecommunications system may be found at http://web.mit.edu/is/tel/dialing.html.

Administrative Offices and Contacts

An alphabetical listing of physics staff may be found here.
A staff listing by department office may be found here.

MIT Identification Card

After your appointment to the Department has been processed, you will need to go to the Student Center basement in order to obtain a MIT ID card. The telephone number of the ID office in order to make sure they have received information about your appointment is 3-3475. More information about the MIT ID cards may be found at http://web.mit.edu/mitcard/getcard.html.

The ID card is used for many purposes including to access locked buildings after-hours, to purchase food on campus and to enter and exit parking lots if you purchase parking.

Parking and Train and Bus Passes

MIT has limited on campus parking for a yearly fee. The Institute also has discounted T and bus passes available for employees to purchase. Information and forms regarding these matters will be given to you upon arrival. More information about parking at MIT may be found at http://mitbdt.mit.edu/directions/parking.html.

Housing

The metro-Boston housing market can be very expensive and challenging. A good place to look for resources that may be applicable to a new employee situation is to review the resources available through the MIT Housing Office website located at http://web.mit.edu/housing/och/.

Another useful resource may be found at on Boston.com's real estate page, located at http://realestate.boston.com.

International Scholars Office

The MIT International Scholars Office (ISO) assists MIT faculty and staff in bringing international scholars to campus for a variety of purposes. The ISO advises on immigration matters, issues visa documents, and provides information and guidance on a wide range of issues such as employment of spouses, health insurance, taxes, language courses, and general information about MIT and the Cambridge/Boston area. Weekly orientation sessions for scholars and their families are held throughout the year. More information about the ISO may be found at http://web.mit.edu/scholars/.

Resources for Families and Companions

The MIT Center for Work, Family and Personal Life is an excellent resource to find information and/or help regarding a huge number of issues. Things for which they provide assistance include such topics as finding child-care and spousal and companion support and social groups. Their web page is located at http://hrweb.mit.edu/worklife/index.html. Their Center, which includes an extensive library, is located at 16-151.
