Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Over the course of the summer, we will be posting some frequently asked orientation questions here for your review. Check back for updates and bring your questions.

Q: If I am arriving at MIT early for an FPOP, can I bring all my stuff with me and move into my dorm before I participate in the FPOP?

A: Yes. In fact you are encouraged to bring all of your luggage with you when you arrive on campus for your FPOP.

Q: How busy will I be during Orientation?

A: You will be extremely busy during Orientation. There are many events and programs to attend. While many events are mandatory, you will have the chance to choose what interests you and what you believe will benefit you as you get oriented to MIT.

Q: What will the weather be like during Orientation?

A: During August, the weather in Boston is usually hot during the day and cooler at night. Please dress casually, bring a hat or sunscreen for outdoor events such as Convocation and wear your most comfortable walking shoes. Also, remember to have something warmer for the evenings.

Q: I need to mail some of my belongings to MIT before I arrival on campus, are there storage options available?

A: If you need to have baggage sent to Cambridge prior to your arrival, you must make arrangements with a separate company. You cannot ship directly to MIT. You must ship to a storage facility.

The nearest storage facility is the Metropolitan Moving and Storage, Corp. The minimum charge for receiving and holding baggage is $60. Call 617-547-8180 for more information. All baggage transportation and customs charges on international shipping are your responsibility.

If you are intending to store your baggage at Metropolitan Moving and Storage, mark it as follows:

Your Name, MIT, Class of 2013

134 Massachusetts Avenue
Cambridge, MA 02139, USA

**Hold for pickup on or about Sept. 3, 2009

A: Yes. International students should attend both international and regular orientation.

Q: Does MIT provide accommodations for parents during Parent Orientation?
