MIT Academics
During Orientation you will meet with your academic advisor to register for your fall classes.
Your freshman year provides you with great opportunities for academic exploration, so you should use your first-year to investigate your various academic options. Take the time to explore everything that MIT has to offer!
To help you explore your academic options, the Office of Undergraduate Advising and Academic Programming (UAAP), as the academic department for all freshmen, has created a special website for your first year: The First Year at MIT for the Class of 2013.
Your first year site contains the following information:
Explore the site to learn more about what awaits you at MIT and for important information on summer deadlines and testing.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact UAAP staff at: 617-253-6771 or firstyear-www@mit.edu.
The Office of Undergraduate Advising and Academic Programming (UAAP)
The Office of Undergraduate Advising and Academic Programming (UAAP) offers many programs to support you and provide you with opportunities for exploration. Some of these programs are specific to your first year at the Institute, such as:
- Orientation, your week-long introduction to MIT. You'll meet your freshman advisor and other students in your advising group, register for Fall subjects, explore residence halls and living groups, and spend time learning about academics and non-academic activities.
- Freshman Advising, including Residence-Based Advising (RBA). All freshmen are advised through either traditional or seminar advising, and choose which type of advising is best for them over the summer.
- Choice of Major events and resources to help you make the best decision in choosing your Course (i.e. major) at MIT. Most students choose a major at the end of their freshman year.
We also offer programs available to all undergraduates:
- Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP), which offers undergraduates an opportunity to conduct research alongside faculty and other research mentors. Approximately 80% of undergraduates participate in UROP at least once during their time at MIT.
- Independent Activities Period (IAP), a special four-week term at MIT that runs from the first week of January until the end of the month. You'll have your choice of a wide variety of how-to sessions, lecture series, classes for credit, workshops, films, tours, and contests.
- Undergraduate Seminars, which are small academic seminars taken for credit. This is a great way to explore different disciplines and broaden your horizons.
Again, the First Year website, for your class is available at http://mit.edu/firstyear/2013/, and offers information about these programs and every aspect of your first year experience. Bookmark the site and visit it often!
