Two MIT Mock Trial team members practice before a trial
The M.I.T. Mock Trial Team (MITMO) is a competitive organization that seeks to learn first hand about the judicial system through participation in an intercollegiate mock trial competition. The goals of this competition are to learn about the work of trial attorneys, develop critical thinking as well as public speaking skills, and enhance communications skills. The M.I.T. Mock Trial Team was founded in 2003 by Helen Belogolova.
MITMO members play the roles of attorneys and witnesses in acting out a criminal or civil case written by the American Mock Trial Association. MITMO witnesses prepare their characters from an affidavit with an attorney on their team and develop their testimony for trial. Attorneys also write opening and closing arguments and direct and cross examinations of witnesses.
MITMO members participate in two competitions every year and all meetings are geared towards preparation for these competitions. The first competition occurs at the end of November or at the start of December and is a "practice" Invitational Tournament. The main event is the Regional Tournament, which occurs at the end of January or at the start of February. Meetings generally occur sporadically at the start of the semester and within weeks of the competitions tend to get more intense.
