Look at your life and work through a Japanese lens.
An internship allows you to integrate your expertise in science, technology, or management with your knowledge of Japanese language and culture. By working in a Japanese research institution, company, or subsidiary of an American company, you gain a Japanese perspective on the latest work happening in your field.
The MIT-Japan Internship Program is open to MIT undergraduate and graduate students as well as recent alumni. We offer three-month summer internships (June-August) or four- to twelve-month internships (after graduation or while enrolled in a graduate program) in dozens of corporations and research institutions across Japan.
How it works.
Interview.
Sit down with us and tell us your goals for an internship in Japan. We'll share with you available opportunities in your field and discuss possibilities and requirements.
Apply.
We forward your resume, research statement, and one letter of recommendation from an MIT faculty member to organizations of your choice.
Review the host's proposal.
Once the company or research center selects you as a potential candidate, it will introduce you to your future supervisor.
Reach agreement.
You and your host institution reach an understanding about the details of the proposed internship, including stipend and travel support.
Work with us.
We facilitate logistics — visa, internship agreement, housing — and work closely with company representatives during your internship. (See Practical info)
Provide feedback.
When you return from your internship, let us know what worked and what didn't. We will evaluate the program from both the student's and the company's perspectives. Download a feedback form.
