Please visit the International Scholars Office website for current health insurance requirements for J1 scholars.
The International Students Office at MIT requires that Visiting Students have at least $2,150 a month for living expenses. Since Visiting Students cannot register for classes for credit, no tuition fee is assessed. These amounts are subject to change at any time.
Like all students at MIT, a Visiting Student must either purchase MIT hospitalization insurance or provide proof of comparable coverage. International students must have insurance which meets all the requirements specified by both State and Federal Regulations for J-1 students.
PLEASE NOTE: Any non-U.S.-based health insurance carriers are no longer accepted by MIT due to efforts to comply with state and federal health insurance regulations. Your insurance carrier must be based in the U.S. or accept claims submitted through a U.S. company in order to qualify. If your health insurance does not meet these qualifications, you MUST purchase MIT Health Insurance. Information regarding the student health plan can be found at: http://web.mit.edu/medical/p-student.html
Visiting Students are not entitled to on-campus housing and, in most cases, should plan to find accommodation off-campus. However, they may apply for any vacancies that exist in the dormitories after the needs of regular students have been met.
