Other than a close second place out of 12 teams at the Point Loma Invitational, with less than half the team present, the regular season was a perfect one. Losing Yermie Cohen and John Granata to injury put the Engineers in the underdog position going for their eighth consecutive NEWMAC Conference Championship but the team refused to lose, coming through with a very big victory led by a 1-2-3 finish in the pole vault and the dominance of the distance runners and horizontal jumpers. Stephen Morton was awarded NEWMAC track and field athlete of the year for his wins in the 100 and long jump. The team finished second in the New England Division III Championship thanks to a very gutsy 10K / 5K effort by Joe Roy-Mayhew, individual victories in the shot put by James Oleinik, the pole vault by Greg Tao and a 23-8 win in the long jump by Morton. The only record set was a 10.79 by Morton in the 100 meter dash. Morton, Stephens and Tao all represented MIT at the NCAA Championship but only Stephens came away with All America honors, tying for eighth in the vault.
MIT displayed tremendous depth in the high hurdles, horizontal jumps, pole vault and the running events from the 800-10,000 in 2008. This should not change in 2009 even with the loss of Anthony Teixeira in the hurdles and horizontal jumps, Stephens in the hurdles and vault, Patrick Barragan in the vault and the distance trio of Brian Jacokes, Joe Roy-Mayhew and Chris Wong.
Returning New England Division III Championship scorers are: Stephen Morton
(Long Jump), Jake Ruzevick (1500), Paul Welle (3000SC), Richard Prevost (3000SC), Greg Tao (Pole Vault), Vlad Sobes (Javelin), Mattias Flander (Triple Jump) and James Oleinik (Shot Put). A
strong group of freshmen will help the team maintain
its strong winning tradition and even improve on the 2008 season. |
