Omari Stephens Claims Eighth in the Pole Vault at the NCAA Division III Indoor Championship

2007-08 brought about another undefeated season and a third place in the New England Division III Championship despite scoring over 100 points. Individually, Stephen Morton was the undisputed leader of the team, earning the New England Division III male Athlete of the Year for his wins in the long jump and triple jump at the New England Division III Championship, qualifying for the NCAA Championship in both events and placing second in the 200 for good measure. Both Morton and Omari Stephens, who won the pole vault at the New England Division III Championship, both earned All America honors by placing eighth at the NCAA Division III Championship. Morton set the MIT record in the triple jump with a performance of 47-11. Three freshmen records went down, John Granata in the 600 with a 1:22.91 and the 4x800 in 7:54.43 and DMR in 10:29.65, highlighting the strength in the middle-distances.

Many seniors will be lost to graduation. The losses will be felt the most in the hurdles, jumps and the distance events. Anthony Teixeira (55HH, LJ, TJ), Omari Stephens (55HH, PV) and Patrick Barragan (PV) accounted for 22 points in the Division III Championship. In the distances, Brian Jacokes, Joe Roy-Mayhew and Chris Wong accounted for 16 points in the championship and ruled the distance events all season. Nevertheless, MIT returns a very strong team with the upcoming sophomores expecting to make a huge impact. The incoming freshman class is very capable in the pole vault, 55HH, high jump, throws and particularly in the middle-distance, distance area to cover most of the losses to graduation.
