Undergraduate
Information

The MIT History Faculty offers undergraduate majors, minors, and concentrations. History subjects that fulfill the requirements for each of these programs are organized in three categories: HASS-D, Periods and Themes, and Seminars (includes Methodology, Thesis Writing, and Graduate Seminars). Subjects classified as HASS-D generally provide introductory material organized by place, topic or period. Some may also satisfy the Communications Intensive requirement in Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (CI-H).
Periods and Themes tend to be more focused geographically and/or chronologically, and may be offered less regularly than HASS-D subjects.
Seminars include the Seminar in Historical Methods (for majors and minors), two semesters of independent Thesis Research and Writing (for majors only), and Graduate Seminars, some of which are open to undergraduates by permission of the instructor.
There are no prerequisites for elective subjects in History. See the History Office for a complete list of subjects.
