Advising Through the Fall Semester
This section provides the information you need to stay abreast of issues during the academic year, so that you can advise students more effectively.
October will mark a turning point for new freshmen. The first quizzes will be held in the freshman subjects and your advisees are committed to their extracurricular activities—UROP, varsity teams, musical performance groups, student groups, etc.—so they may suddenly find that they have a lot less time than they used to.
Currently, this section focuses on the following topics:
- Registration Changes: Information on Fall term Add and Drop dates and other important details regarding registration changes during the term.
- Fifth Week Flags & Beyond: Advice and information about helping advisees who may be struggling in one or more subjects.
- Recognizing Signs of Stress: Tips and advice to help you identify issues that may be affecting your advisees at this point in the semester.
- To Drop a Subject or Not? Making the decision to drop a subject is difficult for first-term freshmen, so this page provides advice on how to help your advisees make the decision.
- Helping Advisees Improve Performance: Tips and tools so that you can help your advisees help themselves.
- Freshman Subject Lecturers: A reference list of all freshman science core subject lecturers that includes contact information should you need to be in touch about fifth week flags or other performance concerns.
- Finishing the Fall Semester: Upcoming end of term dates for advisors, things to consider beyond Fifth Week flags, plus information on Early Sophomore Standing.
- Choice of Major: Information on available resources and people who can help your advisees as they begin to contemplate their major choice.
