Chemistry

To fulfill the Chemistry GIR, you'll need to take one of the three subjects described below. 

• The Department of Chemistry offers two versions of basic chemistry, 5.111 or 5.112.
  
  
• The Department of Materials Science and Engineering Department offers 3.091.

Any one of these subjects will fulfill the Chemistry GIR.

Note that MIT does not offer AP Credit for Chemistry. The only way to fulfill the Chemistry GIR other than taking one of the MIT subjects is by passing the Chemistry Advanced Standing Exam offered during Orientation.

• 5.111 Principles of Chemical Science: High school chemistry is the expected background for 5.111. 
  
  
• 5.112 Principles of Chemical Science: Introduction to chemistry for students with an unusually strong background (minimum of two years) in high school chemistry. Knowledge of calculus equivalent to 18.01 is also recommended.
  
  
• 3.091 Introduction to Solid State Chemistry: Teaches basic principles of chemistry and develops the relationship between electronic structure, chemical bonding, and atomic order. Attention is given to characterization of atomic and molecular arrangements in crystalline and amorphous solids: metals, ceramics, semiconductors, and polymers (including proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids).
