Improving Academic Performance

If you feel that you are not performing as well as you could in a given subject, don't be shy about asking for help. There are many people and resources available to assist you in improving your performance, so don't go it alone!

  • Go to your TA's office hours. Make a connection with your TA or instructor. You should find the posted office hours on each subject's web site or on the subject syllabus. Bring questions to your TA or instructor for clarification.

  • Go to class review sessions. These are advertised on the subject syllabus.

  • Online Resources: Learning to Learn is a comprehensive site to helpstudents strengthen their learning skills and connect with resources within MIT.

  • Tutoring Resources and Academic Support: Tutoring is available in many forms at MIT, especially in science core subjects. The Quick Tips section of the Learning to Learn site has a comprehensive list of tutoring offered by departments throughout the term. The Teaching Yourself to Learn section of that site also provides information on additional resources and support services.

  • Improve Test Performance: Don’t be discouraged if you do not do well on your first test. Tackling Tests has good information about exam preparation, from creating a study plan, to carrying it out and performing well on test day.

  • Managing Stress and Staying Healthy: Stress can also be a difficult obstacle to overcome. As you continue to work hard in your classes, it is important to remember that MIT offers many resources to help you to cope. Stress: An Overview has comprehensive information on stress management, as well as a list of campus resources.

One of the best campus resources is the office of Student Support Services (S^3) whose deans work with students on a broad spectrum of issues.
