Waste

Due to the Thanksgiving holiday weekend from Thursday November 26 to Sunday November 29, all regulated waste pick up, including chemical wastes, radioactive wastes and biosharp pick-ups will be performed prior to the holiday during the morning of Wednesday, November 25th.  If you have any questions or concerns please contact the EHS Office at 617-452-3477. Thank you for your cooperation.

The Environment, Health and Safety Office at MIT provides guidance and support to the MIT community on the proper management of our regulated waste. For more information on proper waste management or to request a Biohazard Sharps Waste Collection, Chemical Waste Collection, Radioactive Waste Collection or Radioactive Mixed Waste Collection (radioactive / chemical) follow the links below:

Asbestos
For general information on the proper management and disposal of waste asbestos, please call the EHS Office at 617-452-3477, or e-mail us at environment@mit.edu .

Biological Waste
To request a Sharps Waste Collection please contact the Biosharps team at biosharps@mit.edu . To properly dispose of biohazard waste, please review Treatment and Disposal Methods for Biologically Contaminated Solid and Liquid Wastes. Or for general information on the proper management and disposal of biohazard waste, please call us at 617-452-3477, or e-mail us at environment@mit.edu .

Biological Mixed Waste (Biological/Chemical)
To request a Biological/Chemical Mixed Waste Collection, inactivate biological component with a treatment which will not increase the chemical hazard associated with the waste. Then package for shipment as chemical waste. Autoclaving is not recommended, under heat and pressure some chemicals may explode or become volatile. Please follow the Chemical Waste Collection process described below. Or for general information the proper management and disposal of biological mixed waste, call us at 617-452-3477 (2-EHSS) or at environment@mit.edu .

Biological Mixed Waste (Biological/Radioactive)
To request a Biological Radioactive Mixed Waste Collection, please inactivate biological component with a treatment which will not volatilize radioactive component of waste. Disinfectant used must be compatible with radiation waste storage and packaging rules (pH, etc.). Package for shipment as radioactive waste. Autoclaving radioactive waste is on a case by case basis. Autoclaving is not recommended where radioactive off gases may be released. Please call and leave a detailed message with Chris Tavares at 617-258-5641. Or for general information the proper management and disposal of biological mixed waste, call Justin Adams at 617-452-3270 or at environment@mit.edu .

Chemical Waste
To request a Chemical Waste Collection , please fill out and submit the information in this form. For general information on the proper management and disposal of chemical waste, call us at 617-452-3477, or e-mail us at environment@mit.edu .

Radioactive Waste
To request a Radioactive Waste Collection please fill out and submit the information in this form. If you have any problems or questions, please call and leave a detailed message at 617-253-3674. Or for general information on the proper management and disposal of radioactive waste, call us at 617-452-3477 (2-EHSS), or e-mail us at environment@mit.edu .
