Biological research is growing rapidly at MIT, with investigators
pursuing exciting new areas of inquiry in fields such as neuroscience
and immunology. This growth is accompanied by the increased use
of biohazardous materials, ranging from blood and tissue, to plant
and animal cell lines, to bacteria and viruses.
Addressing the challenges that are unique to biomedical and biotechnology
research - for example, the potential to transmit infectious diseases,
or the possible risks of working with genetically altered microorganisms
- the EHS Office assists investigators in registering their research,
developing safe research protocols, and obtaining regulatory approvals.
We collaborate closely with MIT faculty to facilitate their work
in a manner that is both safe and in compliance with relevant regulations.
We also provide services for disposal of biological waste.
