Susann LuperFoy: UPOP's New Executive Director

The Dean's Office of the MIT School of Engineering has announced the appointment of Dr. Susann Luperfoy as the executive director of the Undergraduate Practice Opportunities Program, effective 5 November 2007.

Susann LuperfoySusann Luperfoy has worked as a research scientist, professor, and techology manager and with experience in government and industry from early-stage startups to large public corporations. Her technical training and applied research work has centered on the domain of Artificial Intelligence (AI),with an emphasis on spoken dialog, natural language processing, and intelligent tutoring systems. Following a postdoctoral research appointment working on interpreting telephony in Kyoto, Japan, she taught AI and Linguistics at Georgetown University for eight years where she guided graduate research in Automated Spoken Dialog Systems, Machine Translation, Natural Language Processing, Computational Pragmatics, and Acoustic Phonetics. She has authored and edited more than thirty publications and delivered over forty invited lectures and technical tutorials on research and applied AI topics.

She has organized several workshops, symposia, special interest groups, and standards committees and has served on the technical boards of five Cambridge startups. During Akamai's startup years, she directed the growth of an engineering department that delivered analysis tools to Akamai's customers and to the network performance staff in the Network Operations Center. Most recently, she has worked with surgeons and medical school faculty on the integration of Intelligent Tutoring technology into simulation-based training systems, and with robotics engineers on human-robot spoken dialog interaction.

She has been committed to the mission of UPOP since its founding and has witnessed its results in the development of four UPOP internships that she has supervised. In February of 2007 Susann received a Desh and Jaishree Deshpande UPOP Service Award given to outstanding volunteers.

Dr. Luperfoy succeeds Chris Resto as UPOP Director.
