Major Initiatives
As the world's leading school of engineering, MIT has contributed directly to many of the major scientific and technological developments that transformed the 20th century: electricity, automobiles, spacecraft, radio and television, refrigeration, agricultural mechanization, health technologies, and computers. With our remarkable tradition of achievement, passion for excellence, and enduring sense of social responsibility, the MIT School of Engineering is extraordinarily well positioned to lead the next generation of engineering innovation.
We strive to make significant contributions to solving the societal challenges of the 21st century by pursuing a course of leadership through technical excellence and innovation. Thanks to the extraordinary enthusiasm and generosity of our alumni and friends during MIT's recent capital campaign (1997-2004), the School's initiatives have benefited in many ways. (See an article from our e-newsletter.) We welcome additional support to enable us to continue innovations in teaching and research.
To make an online gift to any of the initiatives listed below, please use the secure MIT giving form. To discuss a gift in support of the School of Engineering, please contact Deborah J. Cohen, the School's senior director of development and communications, at (617) 253-2222.
Our initiatives focus on three themes: cultivating a new generation of leaders, investing in new vectors of research, and creating an environment for innovation.
Cultivate a new generation of leaders
- Diversity (including faculty search)
- Educational innovation
- Faculty support and development
- Fellowships
Invest in new vectors of research
- Bioengineering
- Emerging Technologies
- Energy and Environment
- Engineering Systems
- Information Engineering
- Tiny Technologies
Create an environment for innovation, including:
- The Ray and Maria Stata Center for Computer, Information, and Intelligence Sciences
- A nanofabrication facility
- Infrastructure improvements and creation of space for new activities
In addition to our School-wide initiatives, numerous opportunities exist to assist us in building upon the excellence of the School's departments, divisions, laboratories, centers and programs.
