Proposal Timeline
To help you plan ahead for your proposal, the following are important deadlines that you must note in the application process.
- Pre-Proposals for Summer 2008 Fellowships are due by 5PM on Monday, January 7, 2008.
- Pre-proposals should be brief 1-2 page project descriptions submitted via the web form on this site. This form includes space for:
- an outline of the final project proposal, a list of contacts made w/ faculty, lab hosts, or others who will offer project advice/guidance,
- the name or names of faculty members they plan to ask for recommendation letters.
- Committee suggestions for further faculty contact, writing style, etc. will be distributed to you by Feb 1, so that you have plently of time to complete your final proposal.
- Final Proposals for Summer 2008 are due in Room 7-104 by 5PM on Friday, April 4, 2008.
- The Fellowship Committee usually meets several weeks following the proposal deadline, and may meet twice. Decisions are generally announced by early May. Presentation of Fellowship award checks is made sometime in May at a luncheon or dinner with the Eloranta Fellowship Committee. The previous year's winners are included whenever possible.
- Following the summer's work, award recipients will give a public presentation of their projects, generally during IAP.
Proposal Checklist
Be sure to review the following checklist before submitting your final proposal.
- Have you throughly proofread your proposal to make sure that it is free of typographical, spelling
and grammatical errors? If not, the proposal will not be considered, so please proof your work before submitting it.
- Do you have at least one recommendation from an MIT faculty member? If not and you expect that the professor will be submitting it separately, please be sure to let us know when you submit your proposal.
- If your project relates to an area of study that has previosuly been researched, have you examined the intersection between your project and other work done in the area carefully?
- Have you included a realistic estimate of expenses, including travel costs, and appended them to your proposal in the form of a budget?
- Have you clearly stated your project aims/goals and provided background (about the author and/or about the idea) so that your plan can be understood in the appropriate context?
- Does your cover page contain your name, your MIT campus and email addresses, class year, major, and a project title?
