Biography

EWS

I work as a research engineer at the Laboratory for Manufacturing and Productivity (LMP). The LMP is an interdepartmental laboratory within the School of Engineering.

I conduct research through the Field Intelligence Lab and the Auto-ID Lab. These are both part of LMP. In addition, I have other research and administrative duties.

My areas include agriculture, sustainability, supply chain management, and information technology. I am currently developing new approaches for connecting data and mathematical models in a machine understandable way. This involves semantics and syntax for XML expression. As of June 2009, I am starting a new program in RFID. Most of my research is application - oriented.

I began at MIT in 2000. Before MIT, I worked as corporate manager of operations planning for Welch Foods (Concord, MA). While working in industry and academia, I have published over 100 articles on the application of management science to solve real world problems. Many of these articels document innovations.

In January 2007, Springer published my book titled GLOBAL RFID: The Value of the EPCglobal Network for Supply Chain Management. Co-authored with Stuart J. Allen, the book contains an overview of the EPCglobal Network and case studies on the application of RFID technology.

In 2009, I completed several projects in machine understandable semantics. The software is commercially available through the Technology Licensing Office.
