JIN CHEN Beijing, China / New York, USA BArch, 2001, Tsinghua University, China MSArch, 2003, University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati

In the past decade, working intermittently in four cities including Cincinnati, Beijing, New York and Shanghai for US design companies, Jin’s journey to move from being an architect with international business development experience, into global real estate development has been exciting, international, and extremely unusual.

Jin began his career as an architect in a regional firm from Cincinnati. With broad skills and experiences he was appointed as the sole field representative to work in China. In over three years in Beijing, he led the design of 15 residential projects, coordinating and managing US-based team from China. He also undertook all roles to ground and grow design business from US to China. With his hard effort bridging two worlds in broad aspects including business development, design service, culture and communication connection, he built a china subsidiary from zero to ten employees, and signed a total of $1.5 million design fees in projects.

Jin successfully applied what he gained from operating a US subsidiary in China to his own studio focusing on residential development. To expand his vision and collect more life experiences he moved to New York and joined EEK Architects (now a studio of Perkins Eastman) in 2008. He again built the trust in a year and was expatriated as the sole office representative back to Shanghai. He started to register another wholly foreign owned enterprise (WFOE), helped the firm land 8 projects and obtain contracts of over $2M during the tough economic period in US. He was involved in diversified projects including mixed-use, retail, office, senior living and urban plan. The work has exposed him to broad aspects of real estate development—deal sourcing, land acquisition, financial analysis, marketing, design and construction through his fronting role in China for US design firms.

Jin’s internationalized experience develops him a flexible person with versatile skills. His continuous exploration of life experiences fosters his appreciation towards cultural diversity. His leading position in practical field makes him a real enabler to make things happen. With his strong interest connecting and developing RE investment and development in China for US company, Jin wants to focus on studying RE finance, investment and global development at MIT. Jin desires to fulfill his dream transforming from a designer to become a visionary investor and developer in the industry.
