Associated Academic Departments & Programs

The CGCS is an independent MIT research center in the School of Science that also includes participants from the School of Engineering. The CGCS is also active in cooperative efforts involving faculty and researchers from all areas of the Institute.

The Center's research team is comprised of faculty, staff and students, most of whom are affiliated with one of the following academic departments at MIT:

Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences (EAPS)
Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE)
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS)
Biology
Chemical Engineering
Chemistry
MIT/WHOI Joint Program
Additional Interaction through Collaborative Efforts

Although most CGCS-affiliated faculty and staff hold an appointment in one of the academic departments noted above, CGCS participants are enaged in cooperative efforts with faculty and researchers from all areas of MIT, and beyond.

For example, a key CGCS activity is the Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change, which is a joint effort formed in 1991 by the CGCS and the MIT Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research (CEEPR). The Joint Program brings CGCS participants together with researchers in departments representing all five Schools of the Institute, and other organizations, including, for example:

Economics
Political Science
Sloan School of Management
Urban Studies and Planning
Engineering Systems Division
Technology and Policy Program
Earth System Initiative
Energy Initiative
Laboratory for Energy and the Environment
Center for International Studies
The Ecosystems Center of the Marine Biological Laboratory

Also, through involvement in collaborative research the Center represents a broad-based endeavor that includes cooperative international efforts with participants worldwide. Examples of these types of activities, which strengthen ties with climate researchers elsewhere, are the following:

Advanced Global Atmospheric Gases Experiment
World Ocean Circulation Experiment
Estimating the Circulation & Climate of the Ocean
Soil Moisture Active Passive Project
Energy and Water Cycle Study
Alliance for Global Sustainability, which includes:
     • Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology
     • University of Tokyo
     • Chalmers University of Technology

This interdisciplinary and international approach, which is organized to encourage collaboration of researchers with a wide variety of backgrounds and interests, is vital to effectively confront the complex challenge of understanding and predicting global change.

The CGCS involves the participation of approximately 25 MIT faculty members, all of whom are active in research and teaching in an area related to at least one of the core CGCS foci. There are also about 25 professional full-time research staff and postdoctoral associates contributing to the Center's efforts.

The CGCS Directory provides brief biosketches of the faculty and researchers associated with the CGCS. The tables below list the affiliated MIT personnel, with the exception of the many graduate research assistants and undergraduate students participating in CGCS-related research projects.

The CGCS Director is Ronald G. Prinn, the Associate Director is Rafael L. Bras, and the Assistant Director is Anne Slinn. For futher information contact the CGCS office at cgcs@mit.edu. If you're looking for a name not on the lists below, try searching the MIT Directory.
