2001 International Symposium:The Role of Nuclear Energy in a Sustainable Environment
On April 19 and 20, 2001, The MIT Center for Advanced Nuclear Energy Systems (CANES) sponsored a two-day international symposium on the "Role of Nuclear Energy in a Sustainable Environment." The symposium addressed the global implications of the need for electrical energy, possible future environmental constraints, and the emerging approaches to meet the challenges faced by nuclear energy in the three areas of economics, enhanced safety, and spent fuel management. The symposium aimed at those interested in energy policy, particularly nuclear energy development, in government, electricity providers, regulatory bodies, and media. The symposium participants learned about nuclear energy development status on a global basis presented by 16 world-renowned experts and authorities. The two day symposium was devoted to four sessions: (1) Nuclear Energy and the Environment; (2) Nuclear Energy in a Deregulated Electricity Market; (3) Advanced Nuclear Energy Systems; and (4) Rethinking the Nuclear Fuel Cycle. Among the international speakers were Prof. Jose Goldemberg of the University of Sao Paolo, Prof. Wolfgang Kroeger of the Paul Scherrer Institute, and Mr. Katsuya Tomono of Tokyo Electric Power Company. Among the MIT speakers were Professors Ernest Moniz, Michael Golay, and Neil Todreas. |
