Parking and Transportation

There are many options for getting to MIT and getting around campus, Cambridge, and the greater Boston area. Below are some of them.

Take the T

The Department of Biology is easily accessible by T (the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, or MBTA). We encourage all employees, visitors and affiliates to use public transportation whenever possible. The Kendall/MIT T-Stop on the Red Line is only a few minutes' away on foot. MBTA bus lines 64, 68, 85 and CT2 (Crosstown) all have stops at Kendall Square on Main Street. See a map of the Ames and Main Streets area here.

MIT employees and students are also eligible to receive a subsidized T-Pass. Applications are available in Headquarters 68-132 or at the Parking and Transportation Office.

North Station to Cambridge shuttle

In addition, MIT now offers EZ Ride shuttle service between North Station and MIT. This service is free to MIT ID Cardholders.

Zipcar

And don't forget Zipcar! This unique car-share program has quite a few cars parked at or near MIT, and offers special discounts to MIT staff and students. Visit zipcar.com for more information. For MIT affiliates, the application fee and deposit are waived, and the annual fee reduced for MIT staff and alumni. Find out more by clicking "University Partners" on the home page, then "Join an existing university account" on the next page. Enter MIT in the organization field, then "MIT-Faculty, Staff, & Students". This is a great time to join Zipcar!

Bicycling to MIT

The Koch Building offers a secure storage room for your bike if you choose to bicycle to work. See Biology Headquarters for information on access. More tips on biking to work are also at this Parking and Transportation website.

Car and Van Pools

The Parking and Transportation Office also has information on carpools that are available to MIT affiliates.

Parking at MIT

If, however, you must drive your own car to campus, MIT offers limited parking in nearby parking facilities for faculty and staff. Graduate Student Commuters may purchase permits for the Westgate lot.

Parking permits are issued on an annual basis. Each year, the application process begins in late July/early August for September 1. We cannot, unfortunately, guarantee that everyone who wants a permit will receive one, or that everyone will receive a permit for the lot of their choice. For information, please contact Biology Headquarters.

Visitor Parking day passes

Visitor/temporary parking may be arranged through Biology's Parking Coordinator. Visitor Parking is available in the Haywood lot (near MIT Medical, E23) on a limited basis. The day rate is $10.00 per entry. See Headquarters, 68-132, for more information.
