Purpose
Alpha Nu Sigma is the honorary branch of the American Nuclear Society. Members of Alpha Nu Sigma are selected from the top quarter of juniors and the top third of seniors and graduate students in the Nuclear Engineering Department. Members of Alpha Nu Sigma are active in the MIT Section of the American Nuclear Society as well as other campus activities. The MIT Chapter of Alpha Nu Sigma also has a strong tradition of being an active part of the MIT Nuclear Science and Engineering Department.
Activities
Along with the multitude of activities coordinated by the MIT Section of the American Nuclear Society and the MIT Nuclear Science and Engineering Department, in which Alpha Nu Sigma members are highly involved, there are a few activities which are specifically the work of Alpha Nu Sigma.
- David J. Rose Lecture in Nuclear Technology: Approximately every two years the Alpha Nu Sigma Honor Society and the Department of Nuclear Engineering host the David J. Rose Lecture in Nuclear Technology.
- Qualifying Exam Hospitality: Alpha Nu Sigma provides doughnuts and coffee for students taking the doctoral qualifying exams.
- Post Generals Party: In celebration of those who endure the doctoral qualifying exam a party is given after announcements are made about the results. The Post Generals Party are a great opportunity to get to know people in the department early in the semester and should not be missed. Pizza and Beer are the usual fare and are provided free of charge.
- Alpha Nu Sigma compiles mid-term evaluations and polls students in order to select the NED Outstanding Professor Award
Officers
The following is a list of descriptions for the Alpha Nu Sigma officer positions. Also included is the current officer's name and email address in parenthesis after the title.
While the specific responsibilities of the Alpha Nu Sigma officers are not many, it is important that the resources which they represent be utilized. As has been the case in past years, these three officers represent a great deal of experience in the department and the American Nuclear Society and are always willing to get involved in any activity.
President :: Anna Nikiforova [nikann at mit.edu]
The President is directly responsible for the success of the Rose Lecture and the Post Generals Parties. As a member of the American Nuclear Society executive committee he or she is also often called upon to help out with other ANS events. His or her responsibilities also include insuring that the Alpha Nu Sigma executive committee are active members of the ANS Executive Committee.
Vice President :: Paul Romano [romano7 at mit.edu]
The Vice President of Alpha Nu Sigma can be called upon to assist the Co-Presidents of the American Nuclear Society and the President of Alpha Nu Sigma.
Secretary-Treasurer ::
The Secretary-Treasurer is called upon to assist in information dissemination for Alpha Nu Sigma Activities. He or she can also be called upon to assist the American Nuclear Society treasurer with his or her duties.
