Webcast: broadband/DSL

8:45 AM Welcome by Susan Hockfield, President, MIT
9:00 AM Keynote by Dr. R.K. Pachauri, Chairman, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and Director-General, The Energy and Resources Institute
How would climate change influence society in the 21st century?
9:45 AM Panel - The past is prelude: A conversation with IPCC lead authors

Dr. Susan Hockfield opened the 2008 AGS Annual Meeting, stressing the importance of "turning up the volume" particularly in elevating the public debate, telling the truth about both the power and limitations of technology, and focusing the public attention on fundamental challenges of scale and speed. Dr. Pachauri followed with the conference keynote talk in which he explored behavioral, technological, and economic changes that may ensue from society's efforts to adapt to the threat of climate change. His talk was followed by a conversation with IPCC lead authors who discussed their experiences as part of this landmark effort.

The 2008 Annual Meeting built upon the AGS pathways concept, and was designed to move us from sustainability as "something we study" to "something we do," both as the AGS and collectively. The theme "at Scale, in Time, and for All" addresses the growing realization that substantive action is needed, and soon, in both developed and developing regions of the world, and reinforces the pathways, bridging, and transitional focus of the AGS flagship programs.
