Chandler Hovey
(Lighthouse) Park
Location: Marblehead,
MA
Exposure: ?
Depth: ?
Entry: rocky
Description
From the Chandler
Hovey parking lot, there is a pebble beach ahead and to the right. This
is the best spot for an entry. After entering the water, dive the ocean
side (off the right side of the beach) away from the harbor. This is a
good area for seeing lobster and crab.
Notes: There
is a diving ban in effect at this beach on weekends from May 1 to November
1. There can also be heavy boat traffic in this area, even though the
channel markers are quite a ways off shore. Stick to the shallower waters
and always surface near your dive flag.
Directions from
Boston
- Take route 1 North to route 16 East.
- 1A will become the Lynnway after a prominent draw-bridge. The Lynnway
is easily recognized by the surplus of car-dealers and fast food.
- Towards the end of the Lynnway, take care to follow it to the right
as 1A splits off to the left. You should see signs to Nahant at this
point.
- The Lynnway will end at a traffic circle. Take the second right, two-thirds
the way through the traffic circle. This will take you along Lynn Beach
towards Swampscott.
- Follow this road (Route 129) through the remainder of Lynn and through
Swampscott. After you pass enter Marblehead, look for Ocean Ave on the
right. This will be at the second light (first full function light).
- Take a right onto Ocean Ave. and follow it across the Marblehead causeway
onto Marblehead Neck. Bear right at each intersection, and follow the
road to the lighthouse (Chandler Hovey Park).
