EXTENUATING CIRCUMSTANCES
Students should provide a compelling explanation on their petition,
which justifies the special exception they are requesting through
the Committee. Extenuating circumstances refer to situations beyond
a student's control, such as illness. Students citing extenuating
circumstances should ask MIT personnel signing the petition for
corroborating statements and facts in support of their explantion.
This sort of evidence strengthens a student's case.
Personal or Medical Extenuating Circumstances
Students citing extenuating cicumstances of a personal or medical
nature should consult with a counseling dean in Counseling &
Support Services (Room 5-104, x8-4861) before submitting a petition.
The deans can offer guidance with your petition statement, and
they should receive any medical records you have sent to MIT.
The deans will not discuss your situation with the Committee without
your permission. If you give permission, they will reveal only
such information as you are comfortable releasing. The Committee
holds all student information in the strictest confidence.
Because the CAP is entrusted with upholding the integrity of
student records, it is important for the Committee to confirm
(as much as possible) the events a student sets forth in a petition.
The counseling deans play an integral role in this process by
gathering sensitive information and providing the Committee with
appropriate corroboration. A petition absent of this support is
likely to be tabled or denied
(for lack of evidence).
If you have any questions about this process, please feel free
to contact the CAP.
