(3rd edition)
Reference Books
At a lower level than our course you may consult:
Physics, Halliday, Resnick, and Krane, Volume 2
The Feynman Lectures on Physics, R.P. Feynman, Volume II
Electricity and Magnetism, E.M. Purcell
At a level similar to our course, this offers useful insights:
Electromagnetism, Pollack and Stump, Addison-Wesley (2002)
At a level higher than our course, you may consult:
Classical Electrodynamics, J.D. Jackson (3rd edition)
The Classical Theory of Fields, L.D. Landau and E.M. Lifshitz
These books are all on reserve in the Physics Reading Room.
Homework
There will be 11 problem sets, due on Fridays at 4 pm in the Drop Off Boxes at 3rd floor of Bldg. 8 at the junction of Bldg. 16. (A set is due every Friday of the semester except 11/10 and 11/24). Each Pset counts 3% of your final grade; except, your problem set with the lowest score will be dropped. Problem sets will be posted at the website 7 days in advance of the due date (except the last, which will be posted 14 days in advance). Late homework will receive 50% credit unless arrangements are made with the lecturer no later than Wednesday of the week in which the homework is due. Homework received after Tuesday at 5 pm (when solutions will be posted at the website) will receive no credit. Collaboration and discussion in doing the homework are very much encouraged, but you must write your own solution and not copy someone else’s.
Tests
A 50-minute in-class midterm exam on 10/23 and a final exam during
exam week.
Grading
Homework 30%, Midterm exam 30%, Final exam 40%. Your cumulative score is available at the class website, http://web.mit.edu/8.07/www/ Note: you may attend either recitation at your convenience; please indicate the time of your recitation section (R1 or R2) on your homework so that it may be returned to you at the recitation section of your choice.
